Senior Data Scientist

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist with a proven background in cancer and genomics healthcare areas, with strong previous experiences in developing innovative physical mathematical models for complex data modelling to deliver even better clinical services.

Your main contribution will be focused on the creation, the development and the application of novel methods for data modelling and data integration exploiting a significant and fast-growing number of complex datasets available in national and international research projects carried on. In detail, complex data will include, clinical, genomics (both NGS and Single Cell Sequencing), imaging, treatment and outcome data associated to a specific disease. Such complex data are always collected considering a specific disease-related population, where the main diseases considered are cancers, with main focus on those of hematological type.

The main objectives of the research activity will be genomic landscaping of rare diseases, patient stratification, disease-gene prediction, drug repurposing; the common purpose leading the research activities is that of a progress toward a data-driven personalized medicine for a better health care system.

You will be part of the Humanitas AI Center reporting to the Chief Innovation Officer. The AI Center of Humanitas, a fast-paced research team at one among Italy’s best institutions working in the biomedical research field, is focused in research in the field of Artificial Intelligence applied in healthcare. Research and development areas include predictive and decision-support systems based on data-driven model (ML/DL models) to optimize clinical processes and ultimately improve the quality of patient care. We are a team of multidisciplinary scientists who work day by day on e-health and AI projects, by collaborating with clinical staff (doctors, nurses, researchers) and management staff.

Main activities:

  • Retrieval and querying of data from distributed architecture databases,
  • Exploratory data analysis on clinical data,
  • Innovative algorithms design and data analysis to discover and assess significant dynamics and patterns from complex data,
  • Explore, define and support the validation of statistical and machine learning models in order to obtain useful tools to be applied in the biomedical field,
  • Create and iterate possibly scalable computational models, in order to make the theoretical findings applicable to real world data,
  • Be an entrepreneur. We expect the candidate to be willing to start new projects, transform them in something concrete and bring them to success,
  • Collaborate with international external partners on cross-academic research projects.


Candidate profile

We are looking for motivated candidates who appreciate challenging tasks, objectives and are strongly oriented to both scientific excellence, high performances computing and human relationships.


Mandatory Requirements

PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematical and/or Physics Engineering, Software Engineering or equivalent professional experience (3+ years in the same field).

Fluent in written and spoken English and Italian.

Hard Skills

  • Strong scripting and programming skills (e.g. Maltab, R, Python),
  • Strong experience with machine learning techniques and algorithms (e.g. k-NN, Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machines, Random Forests, etc.),
  • Experience with data science frameworks (e.g. tensorflow, pytorch, scikit-learn, scipy, pandas, numpy) and visualization frameworks (e.g. plotly, seaborn, matplotlib),
  • Strong experience with pre-processing and exploratory data analysis on clinical data, with effective results reporting,
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.

Strongly recommended:

  • Experience in projects focused on omics, biomedical data and applications is appreciated,
  • Previous working experiences on network theory, dynamical systems, stochastic processes,
  • Good knowledge of the most advanced methods for imaging data analysis.

Contract and duration

We can offer a fixed-term contract of at least two years, that could be converted into a permanent contract. Salary, as well as employment level, will be defined based on candidate's profile.
