The MicrobiomeLab is a translational unit established as an academic-industrial joint initiative between the Corporate R&D of Alfasigma and the Immunology & Microbiota Unit of Humanitas University, devoted to derisking the development of novel microbiome-based therapeutics for the treatment of gastrointestinal and Gut-Brain Axis diseases.

Embedded in the research facilities within the campus of Humanitas University, Milan (Italy), directed by Maria Rescigno, professor of General Pathology, the aim of the MicrobiomeLab is to study the mechanism of action and the potential therapeutic effects of drug candidates by investigating the modulation of microbiota functions and the interactions with the host, including the intestinal barriers, the immune system, the gut-liver and the gut-brain axes.

To strengthen our team, we are looking to fill the position of:  Microbiome Specialist.

As Microbiome Specialist, you will be working in an environment where you:

  • will be responsible to conduct specific experiments in the lab using cutting-edge technological approaches (e.g. organ-on-chip, microbiome consortia profiling, etc.) and to plan and coordinate the activities involving various external  technology providers from the European ecosystem  and internal expertise present in Alfasigma and Humanitas University, with the aim to:
    • deliver the project milestones;
    • generate evidences to be exploited as new intellectual properties for possible industrial applications;
    • prepare scientific reports and publications;
    • represent the Team at international conventions.
  •  will report and collaborate with both the Principal Investigators at the MicrobiomeLab and support the Alfasigma Project Leaders with critical thinking and by providing experimental evidence of the target product profile for the Microbiome Projects entering the Alfasigma R&D pipeline. Publications in high impact journals will be also produced and coordinated by professor Maria Rescigno.
  • will master the most advanced technologies of the microbiome research and drive the experimental work to support the scientific rationale for the development of microbiome-based therapeutics, in collaboration with a network of research centers providing technologies (e.g. metagenomic, metabolomic, CMC, data analysis and modelling), innovative investigation tools (e.g. human tissues, iPS cells,  organ-on-chips) and approaches (e.g. Precision  Medicine).

 For this position you will need the following education, experience and skills:

  • a PhD (or MD) in biomedical disciplines with relevant, hands-on experience in either Microbiology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Immunology, or Gastrointestinal biology and related disciplines.
  • proven expertise in the field of microbiology, gut microbiota, gastrointestinal tract biology, gut-liver and gut-brain axis regulation and related diseases. Experience with analysis and manipulation of bacterial microbiome, human cells and tissues, organ-on-chips and pre-clinical animal models is strongly desired. A track-record of working experience in recognized research laboratories and of peer reviewed scientific publications is required.
  • Proficiency of English language and good communication skills are required, as well as evidence of being a good team player, interest in learning about different cultures, and with a sense of urgency in delivering high-quality, relevant scientific results with the proper methodologies. Knowledge of Italian language is an upside, but not a requirement.
  • Overall, we are seeking a collaborative and problem-solving candidate with an open-minded and multidisciplinary approach, leadership skills in the management of research projects and a strong capacity for teamwork and interest in developing a career at the academic-industry interface.
