Humanitas Research Hospital is a highly specialised research and university hospital. It is the first Italian hospital certified for its excellence by the Joint Commission International as Academic Hospital and it hosts a research center, as well as the residency programs and clinical training of Humanitas University, an international Medical School that stands out for its real-world simulation-based approach to medical training.
Humanitas Research is made possible every day by more than 500 passionate physicians, biologists, physicists, data scientists and technologists, that work in the hospital wards and across 10.000 square meters of high-tech laboratories at the Humanitas University campus. Their common mission is advancing science to make a difference in patients' life.
Humanitas Research is guided by unmet clinical needs and it leverages high-end technologies to dissect the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying human pathologies in fields ranging from cardiovascular medicine to neuroscience, from immunology to cancer and microbiology, with the final goal of developing new therapies and new diagnostic and prognostic strategies. The institute is recognized worldwide for its contribution to the field of tumor immunology and to the understanding of the inflammation-cancer connection.
Position Overview
The Precision Medicine research group led by Prof. Salvatore Piscuoglio (salvatore.piscuoglio@hunimed.eu) is seeking a highly motivated Laboratory Technician in Cell and Molecular Biology (100% position) to join our team of bioinformaticians, molecular biologists, pathologists, and clinical fellows.
The successful candidate will develop, optimise, and apply cutting-edge cellular and molecular methods to generate 3D in vitro and ex vivo tumour models that recapitulate tumour architecture and mimic cell–cell interactions within the tissue microenvironment. Specific tasks include the generation and maintenance of patient-derived tumour organoids, tumour fragments, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). The position will contribute to developing next-generation, patient-specific tumour models supporting precision oncology initiatives within the Humanitas ecosystem.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Processing patient-derived samples according to pre-established guidelines (e.g., tissue dissociation, isolation of PBMCs/TILs, endothelial cells, sample freezing and storage, nucleic acids and protein extraction, and patient-derived tumour organoid/fragment generation and maintenance)
- Generation and maintenance of cell cultures and execution of experiments on cell cultures
- Updating the database of patient samples and reagents
- Documenting the experiments
- Providing general support for lab maintenance within the scope of this project
You’re the perfect candidate if you have:
- "Laboratory Technician" degree or a Bachelor's/Master's degree in molecular biology, biotechnology or a related discipline
- Excellent technical expertise in molecular and cell biology techniques
- Hands-on experience handling and processing patient samples
- Hands-on experience with cell culture and flow cytometry techniques is a must
- Experience in primary cell culture and 3D cultures is highly desirable
- Technical expertise in organoid generation and maintenance is a plus
- Once trained, the ability to work independently
- Organized and detail-oriented; ability to maintain accurate documentation of experiments and sample information
- Collaborative and able to work effectively in a team environment
- Good organizational skills and ability to multitask
- Fluency in English is a must
What we offer:
We offer financial support until November 2027 and the opportunity to work in a stimulating international environment. This position will allow you to develop cutting-edge skills in 3D tumour model generation and contribute directly to advancing personalised medicine in cancer. You will have access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, core computing resources, and experimental facilities within a vibrant, world-class research ecosystem. Humanitas University and IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital provide dedicated training programmes to broaden your expertise, expand your portfolio, and enhance your skill set in a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting.
